The African Development Bank in Action Activities in the water and sanitation sector

The Bank Group started its operations in Morocco in 1970 and funded the first drinking water and sanitation project in 1978.

Morocco is the highest recipient of Bank interventions. Since 1970, the Bank has approved for Morocco more than 100 operations in different sectors amounting to about UA* 5.5 billion.

In the drinking water and sanitation sector, the Bank has financed 11 investment projects and a sector support programme amounting to UA* 724 million.

The Bank is currently financing four drinking water and sanitation projects amounting to UA* 388 million, representing approximately 25% of the Bank Group’s ongoing portfolio in Morocco. The objectives of these interventions are to mobilize financial resources and establish a regulatory and institutional framework in order to improve access to safe drinking water and sanitation services through integrated water resources management.

Current funding in the drinking water and sanitation sector includes:

o The 8th drinking water supply and sanitation project, financed by an ADB loan amounting to EUR 66.5 million (about UA* 60 million).

o The 9th drinking water supply and sanitation project, financed by an ADB loan amounting to EUR 81 million (about UA* 73 million).

o The 10th drinking water supply and sanitation project, financed by an ADB loan amounting to EUR 33.84 million and USD 53.34 million (approximately UA* 65 million).

o The Project to upgrade drinking water supply in the Rabat – Casablanca Coastal Area, funded by an ADB loan amounting to EUR 162.31 million and USD 55.06 million (approximately UA*180 million).
