Book of the Week 1

The Library will feature a book from its collection each week.

Greenwell’s Mine Engineering. Published 1869

A remarkable book for all those that are interested in mining, geology, hydrogeology, history, economic history and much besides. This is the 2nd edition and is in reality a complete rewrite of the first. Hand coloured plates of mine geology, and sections of mining areas, faults and washouts. The book looks in depth at UK coal fields but also covers fossils and mining machinery and tools used in the mid-19th century. What is unexpected is that it also covers the mining geology of Norther French Coalfield.

It has been quoted in several of our reports as well as being of value to academics, All Party Committees of Parliament, local authorities, and geographical/economic historians. It is a hard book to find.
