Dr Keith Gregson.

Keith Gregson was a very long-term supporter and Trustee of Clean Rivers Trust.

Keith Gregson, Trustees Meeting, March 2017.

An exceptional Yorkshireman, mountaineer, mathematician and academic: it was when he was a senior lecturer at the Department of Environmental Science at the University of Nottingham that he introduced students ,MSc and PhD to the Trust to introduce them to the issues of minewater and colliery environmental impacts (1997 to1999). Many students gained from his enthusiasm for Annesley Colliery and its settlement ponds in Nottinghamshire, at which we managed to gain a freedom of access for research unrivalled anywhere.

Keith loved mathematics and wrote accessibly on the subject. ‘Without a basic understanding of maths, students of any science discipline are ill-equipped to tackle new problems or to apply themselves to novel situations’ he wrote as the purpose of his last book; Understanding Mathematics published in 2007.

A man who enjoyed teaching and engaging with new ideas. He gave humour and encouragement to those he felt needed it, but always expected the highest standards of work from all.

I will always be grateful to him for his support over his twenty-three years as a Trustee of Clean Rivers Trust. His ideas and advice will be missed.

Harvey Wood.
